An interesting alternative to the normal route is the northeast ridge. Ambitious alpinists love the exposed firn ridge. The way down is on the normal route, so you have an impressive traverse of the top of Tirol.

We take the Gletscherexpress underground for conquering the first 1,000m of altitude gain up to an altitude of 2,840m. From there we continue by foot across a pathless terrain of moraines, to the Mittelberg glacier and to the Mittelbergjoch (3,166m).
Then we ascent the north faced glacier up to the start of the north east ridge at 3580 m. We follow the wonderful ridge to the north summit and then to the south summit on 3770 m with its impressive summit cross. We enjoy the breathtaking 360° view.
Then we go down on the south west route (normal route; UIAA I+). We go back to the Mittelbergjoch and to the top station of the Glacier Express. Then we return back to the valley with the Glacier Epxress.
FITNESS: fitness for 6-8 h and up to 1200 m vertical metres up and down.
